Cortisol gets a bad reputation, but it's not inherently a problem — it's a normal, necessary part of your stress response, helping regulate blood sugar, metabolism, and inflammation. The issue isn't cortisol itself; it's cortisol that stays elevated long after the stressor is gone.
Physical or psychological stress, poor sleep, excess caffeine, prolonged intense exercise, and illness all raise cortisol. On the other side, relaxation practices and adequate sleep help bring it back down — cortisol naturally runs lowest at night as part of its daily rhythm.
Chronically high cortisol is linked to increased abdominal fat storage, muscle breakdown, and blood sugar problems, and it can meaningfully work against weight loss efforts even when diet and exercise look good on paper. This is why "just eat less, move more" sometimes doesn't work as expected — if cortisol is chronically elevated, the body is working against the deficit.
Managing this isn't about eliminating stress entirely, which isn't realistic. It's about giving cortisol regular opportunities to come back down — through sleep, recovery, and deliberate downtime.
