Testosterone gets filed under "men's health," but it plays a real role in everyone's metabolism, mood, and body composition — women produce it too, just at lower levels.
In terms of what raises it: resistance training, adequate sleep, a healthy body fat percentage, and sufficient vitamin D all support healthy testosterone levels. On the other side, chronic stress, poor sleep, excess body fat, and heavy alcohol use all push it down — and aging brings a gradual decline of its own.
Why does this matter for weight loss specifically? Low testosterone is associated with reduced muscle mass and increased fat mass. Since muscle is metabolically active tissue, less of it means a slower resting metabolism — one of the quieter ways low testosterone can make weight management harder, independent of diet.
This is also a two-way street: excess body fat itself lowers testosterone, which then makes it easier to keep gaining fat and harder to build muscle — a cycle worth breaking at the source rather than chasing with more restriction.
